Specimen Required:

5.0 mL from a first-morning specimen preferred but random specimen is acceptable.  Send specimen in a urine specimen cup refrigerated.

Patient Prep:

Specimen should not be collected after exertion, during infection, or acute illness.

Reference Values:

Female:  <25 mg/g
Male:       <17 mg/g

Note:  Because of the inherent day to day variability of albumin excretion into the urine, two or three microalbumin levels measured within a 3-6 month period should be abnormal before considering a patient to have crossed the diagnostic threshold.  (American Diabetes Association Position Statement 1997)
